Highlights

  • Stunning gorge-rim camping above the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red River — 800-ft canyon walls visible from camp
  • 5 rim campgrounds (El Aguaje, La Junta, Pescado, Big Arsenic, Little Arsenic) and 22 additional designated gorge-rim sites; dark sky designation
  • Elk, mule deer, and golden eagles; paved 13-mile Wild Rivers Backcountry Byway (NM 378) to all rim sites

Planning Notes

Rim campgrounds are the trailer-accessible option; river-level sites (16 backcountry walk-in sites) require steep trail descents — no trailer access. In-site pull-ins designed for smaller rigs (~20 ft); open overflow parking at trailhead accommodates larger rigs. Seasonal water at visitor center. Distinct from Cebolla Mesa (free, south) and Orilla Verde/Pilar (hookups) — three different sections of Rio Grande del Norte NM.
