Highlights

  • Roosevelt Lake is the largest lake in Arizona — 22 miles of water backed by Mazatzal Mountains; free dispersed camping on adjacent Tonto NF land along FR 60 and Tonto Creek arm
  • Apache Trail (AZ-88) cuts through Superstition Wilderness to the southwest — one of Arizona's most dramatic scenic drives, trailer-accessible from Roosevelt to Tortilla Flat (paved eastward from Roosevelt)
  • Cholla and Windy Hill Recreation Areas ($22–24/nt) are the developed options with boat ramps, showers, and flush toilets as a fallback

Planning Notes

US-188 north from Globe provides paved access to the dam and developed CGs. AZ-88 (Apache Trail) east from the Tortilla Flat junction to Roosevelt is paved and trailer-accessible; the western section from Apache Junction to Fish Creek Hill is unpaved with severe grades — not recommended for trailers. Free dispersed sites are on FR 60 east of the dam and along the east arm of the lake. 32-ft practical limit for dispersed access roads. From Austin: ~12.5 hrs via I-10 W to Phoenix then US-60 E to Globe then US-188 N.
