Highlights
- ▶ Camp on the rim of Utah's "Little Grand Canyon" — a 1,000-ft San Rafael River gorge with zero entry fee and zero competition
- ▶ Free dispersed sites within walking distance of the overlook; 14 miles of graded gravel from Castle Dale (2WD OK when dry)
- ▶ Triangle for day trips: Goblin Valley SP (33 mi), Arches NP (80 mi), and Nine Mile Canyon petroglyphs (90 mi) all reachable without breaking camp
Planning Notes
No water, no toilets at the overlook dispersed area. Castle Dale (14 mi) has fuel and a small grocery. Gravel road is wide and well-graded; 2WD feasible in dry conditions. One of the closest serious canyon-country dispersed sites to Texas — skip the extra 60-min push to Moab and camp free instead. From Austin: ~13.8 hrs via I-20 W to I-25 N to US-6 W.
