Highlights

  • 1.8-million-acre forest covering the Rio Grande headwaters — enormous uncovered region with no current database entries
  • Creede is an intact historic silver-mining town unlike any other Colorado stop; Wheeler Geologic Area and Bachelor Loop nearby
  • Rio Grande CG on CO-149 (paved access) is the reliable hookup-free developed fallback for larger rigs

Planning Notes

Best trailer access via forest roads off US-160 near South Fork (not Lost Trail CG — 38 mi of forest road with limited turnaround). Monsoon rain July–August can soften dispersed access roads. Monte Vista and Alamosa are 30–40 mi for full resupply. Download Rio Grande NF MVUM before departure.
