Highlights

  • Colonial silver-mining ghost town at 2,750m elevation — cobblestone streets, stone ruins, active church
  • Wirikuta sacred desert: peyote pilgrimage route of the Wixaritari (Huichol) people
  • Ogarrio Tunnel — 2.3km hand-hewn 19th-century mule tunnel through the mountain (trailer clearance: verify with local guide)
  • Spectacularly clear high-desert dark skies; almost no light pollution for 100 km

Planning Notes

Best accessed as a 2-night stop after Cuatro Ciénegas (~280 mi, 4.9h): Cuatro Ciénegas → Monclova → Saltillo → Matehuala → Real de Catorce. Ogarrio Tunnel has a trailer fee and tight clearance — verify max width before committing (most travel trailers under 8 ft wide pass). Multiple designated camping spots in the Wirikuta desert; some ejido (communal land) camping requires small fee paid to local caretaker. Nearest full services: Matehuala (25 mi). Note: 515 miles from Austin is a full 9.5h drive — recommended as Stop 2 via Cuatro Ciénegas overnight, not a direct Day 1 drive.
