Highlights

  • 24-mile BLM byway through a remote canyon east of the Rio Grande — fossil exposures, pictographs, dramatic cliff bands, virtually no crowds
  • Multiple dispersed pull-off sites with wide-open desert views; self-contained rigs only
  • Excellent winter camping option accessible when higher elevation sites are snowed in; fills the middle-Rio-Grande BLM gap

Planning Notes

No water or facilities for the full 24 miles. Road is graded gravel and passable in 2WD in dry conditions — becomes impassable in mud. Avoid after rain. From Austin: Socorro via I-10 W to Las Cruces then I-25 N (~570 mi), or via US-54 through Carrizozo (~565 mi).
