Highlights

  • Pawnee Buttes sandstone formations rise 100 ft from the shortgrass prairie — unique Great Plains landscape found nowhere else in Colorado
  • Extraordinary raptor nesting April–May (ferruginous hawks, golden eagles); pronghorn antelope throughout
  • Extreme dark skies on the open plains — Milky Way photography without mountains in the way

Planning Notes

Gravel prairie roads 2WD in dry conditions; ~22 ft practical. Very windy. Private property checkerboard — confirm public land before camping. Raptor nesting closure (Apr 1–Jun 30) near the buttes limits some access. Grover (10 mi SW) has minimal supplies.
