Highlights

  • At $5/nt, the cheapest campground staging the Wave lottery (Coyote Buttes North) — the most oversubscribed day-hike permit in the U.S.; pick up lottery results at Kanab BLM office 29 mi west
  • Paria River badlands behind camp: pink, white, and chocolate clay eroded into hoodoos — a completely different landscape from the sandstone canyon parks
  • Trailhead for Paria Canyon multi-day slot canyon hike (permit required); camp here the night before without paying park-tier rates

Planning Notes

7 vehicle sites + 5 walk-in tent sites; paved US-89 then short dirt approach. Vault toilets; potable water available at the Paria Contact Station at the campground. ⚠️ Flash floods kill people in the canyon — do not enter Paria Canyon when thunderstorms are anywhere upstream (even 50 miles away). Summer camping discouraged. From Austin: ~16.3 hrs via I-10 W to US-89 N.
