Highlights

  • Free NPS campground with a direct overlook of Tsegi Canyon and the Betatakin cliff dwelling (visible from the rim without hiking)
  • Ranger-led hikes to Betatakin (5 mi RT, limited daily slots) and Keet Seel (17 mi RT, permit required) depart from camp — two of the best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in the US
  • Monument Valley (45 min southeast) and Canyon de Chelly (90 min east) make this a natural anchor for a Four Corners cultural circuit

Planning Notes

31 sites in the loop; paved access. Vault toilets, water spigot at visitor center. Keet Seel is permit-only and limited — reserve via Recreation.gov months in advance. Ranger-led Betatakin tours are first-come at the visitor center. From Austin: ~16.5 hrs via I-10 W then US-160 W through Kayenta.
