Highlights

  • Free dispersed at the edge of a 1,200-ft cliff above the San Juan River goosenecks — arguably the most dramatic free overlook camp in Utah
  • Monument Valley (20 mi south), Goosenecks of the San Juan SP (10 mi), and Valley of the Gods (below the rim) all visible or day-trip close from one free camp
  • Cedar Mesa plateau silence and full darkness — zero services means zero light pollution; Bears Ears solitude at its ceiling

Planning Notes

⚠️ Access via UT-261 off US-163; the Moki Dugway (11% switchback grade, narrow gravel) is on this road IF approaching from the south (Mexican Hat). Come from the NORTH on UT-261 from Blanding/US-95 to reach the Muley Point turnoff (Road 8800) BEFORE the Dugway descent — this avoids the Dugway entirely with a trailer. Confirm routing before committing. No water, no toilets. Mexican Hat (14 mi) has fuel. From Austin: ~14 hrs via US-285 N to US-491 N to US-163 W.
