Highlights

  • Kebler Pass hosts one of the largest contiguous aspen groves on Earth — fall color rivals Maroon Bells with a fraction of the crowds (third week of September)
  • Lost Lake: high-alpine lake camping at 10,000+ ft with direct views of the West Elk Peaks
  • Entirely different approach corridor from Gunnison side vs. Maroon Bells from Aspen — reaches Gunnison NF zones with zero current coverage

Planning Notes

Kebler Pass Road is wide and well-maintained dirt, 2WD-capable throughout for trailers; avoid Splain's Gulch spur. Note: dispersed camping near Crested Butte is restricted to designated sites under Forest Order GMUG-2022-10 — do not free-camp in the first 7 drainages. Lost Lake CG has pull-throughs; reserve on Recreation.gov. Black Bear Pass and other roads nearby are 4WD only — stay on Kebler Road.
