Highlights
- ▶ Ponderosa and spruce-fir forest at 7,500–8,800 ft on the Kaibab Plateau — free dispersed camping 30 miles north of the North Rim Campground on the same plateau
- ▶ FR 461 (East Rim Road) and FR 22 provide the best trailer-accessible dispersed areas; sweeping views over House Rock Valley and the Vermilion Cliffs from the plateau edge
- ▶ Jacob Lake Inn is the only services hub on the plateau — fuel, food, and a small store; Kanab, UT is 37 miles north for full resupply
Planning Notes
Download North Kaibab Ranger District MVUM before departure. FR 461 leaves US-89A east of Jacob Lake — graded gravel, good for 32-ft trailers for the first 8–10 miles. The plateau is only accessible mid-June through mid-October (snow closes AZ-67 to the North Rim). From Austin: ~16 hrs — via I-10 W to Phoenix, I-17 N to Flagstaff, US-89 N to Page, then US-89A W to Jacob Lake; or via I-15 through Utah.
