Highlights

  • Free dispersed camping across 1.87 million acres of canyon country — no permit, no fee; stop anywhere flat and legal on the first 20 miles of the road
  • BLM's Devil's Garden hoodoos (~10 mi south of Escalante) are roadside and walkable — camp nearby for sunrise on the formations before day-trippers arrive
  • Peek-a-Boo and Spooky slot canyons (25 mi south) are among the best non-technical slots in Utah, reachable by short day-hike from a dispersed camp

Planning Notes

⚠️ Hole-in-the-Rock Road is 57 miles of maintained dirt south from Escalante on UT-12. First ~20 miles generally OK for carefully driven trailers (≤30 ft) in dry weather; beyond 20 miles requires high-clearance. Check conditions at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center before heading out — do NOT enter when wet (clay surface). No water or services on the road. Escalante has fuel, groceries, and water fill. Calf Creek Recreation Area (UT-12, 15 mi east) offers a formal BLM site at $15/nt with water as a fallback. From Austin: ~15.5 hrs via I-10 W to US-89 N.
