Highlights
- ▶ Fish Lake at 8,800 ft elevation — Utah's largest natural lake holds world-class trout fishing; camp free in the national forest adjacent to the water
- ▶ Quaking aspen groves surround the lake; fall color peaks mid-October — the only forest-and-lake character on this entire Utah list
- ▶ Cool-air escape when Capitol Reef (30 mi east) and GSENM are deep into summer heat; add a forest night to a canyon circuit without a major detour
Planning Notes
Dispersed on Fishlake NF lands surrounding Fish Lake (camp outside the developed fee campgrounds). Paved UT-25 access from UT-24. High elevation — snow possible in May and September; check USFS road conditions. Fish Lake Lodge (historic, full restaurant) provides limited resupply at the lake itself. From Austin: ~15.3 hrs via I-10 W to US-285 N to UT-24 W.
