Highlights

  • AZ-366 (Swift Trail) climbs 7,000 ft of elevation gain over 35 miles from the Sonoran Desert to 10,720-ft Mount Graham — the most dramatic single-road elevation gain in the state
  • Arcadia and Shannon CGs at 6,700–7,600 ft in mixed conifer forest; dispersed sites along the road below those elevations; Treasure Park CG at 9,300 ft (tent-sized sites only)
  • Mount Graham International Observatory sits near the summit (separate access road); Pinaleno red squirrel (endangered) found only on this mountain range

Planning Notes

AZ-366 (Swift Trail) from US-191 south of Safford — paved all the way to Shannon CG at 7,600 ft, suitable for trailers to 22 ft. Beyond Shannon the road narrows — larger trailers should turn around. Arcadia CG (first developed CG at ~6,700 ft, Recreation.gov) is the most trailer-accessible. June–April upper section closed by snow. From Austin: ~11.5 hrs via I-10 W through El Paso then Lordsburg NM then US-70 W to Safford.
