  • Miller Peak Wilderness on the US-Mexico border — the Huachuca Mountains rise to 9,466 ft from the Sonoran Desert and host one of the most diverse bird assemblages in North America
  • Carr Canyon Road climbs 7 miles from Sierra Vista to the Ramsey Vista area with dispersed camping and access to Miller Peak Trail (6 mi RT, stunning border-crossing views)
  • Ramsey Canyon Preserve (Nature Conservancy, 4 mi NE) is the US hummingbird capital — up to 14 species recorded, including Violet-crowned and White-eared; day-trippable from camp

Planning Notes

Carr Canyon Road (Huachuca District, Sierra Vista): paved to the day-use area, then rough gravel to the campground above. Ramsey Vista CG is very small (4 sites) and tight for large trailers — 22 ft practical limit. Call (520) 378-0311 before departure to confirm road conditions and site availability. Dispersed camping is also allowed on the forest below the developed area. From Austin: ~12 hrs via I-10 W through Tucson then AZ-90 S to Sierra Vista.
