Highlights

  • Ponderosa pine forest at 7,000 ft immediately adjacent to Flagstaff — the easiest access to true high-elevation forest dispersed camping in Arizona
  • FR 151 (Woody Mountain Road, off US-89A west of downtown) has the best trailer-friendly sites: flat, shaded, on graded gravel
  • Grand Canyon South Rim (60 mi north), Sedona red rocks (30 mi south), Meteor Crater (35 mi east) — one of the best day-trip radii in the Southwest from a single camp

Planning Notes

FR 151 leaves US-89A approximately 3 miles west of downtown Flagstaff. First 2 miles are widest and best for trailers up to 32 ft. Pre-monsoon fire restrictions (June–July) frequently close dispersed camping — check AZ wildfire restriction map at azstateparks.com/fire before departing. Flagstaff city is 5 minutes for resupply. Mormon Lake Road / Lake Mary (FR 3) and Crater Lake Road offer additional dispersed areas 10–15 mi south. From Austin: ~14 hrs via I-10 W to Phoenix then I-17 N to Flagstaff.
