Highlights

  • Buckhorn Wash petroglyph panel — 130+ feet of Barrier Canyon-style rock art on the National Register, walkable from camp without any separate entry fee or permit
  • Canyon-bottom setting through the San Rafael River Gorge; sites along 9 miles of canyon road give a completely different feel from the Wedge Overlook rim sites 15 miles north
  • Combine with Wedge Overlook (free) and Goblin Valley SP for a full San Rafael Swell 3-stop circuit in one of Utah's most underrated regions

Planning Notes

26 sites along a 9-mile gravel/dirt canyon road. Pit toilets, shade structures, interpretive petroglyph panels. No water — fill in Castle Dale (15 mi). Accessible from I-70 exit 131 north via Castle Valley Road (~25 mi). From Austin: ~13.5 hrs.
