Highlights
- ▶ Campsites within 50 yards of the Arkansas River below the Collegiate Peaks — some of the most dramatic riverside camping in Colorado
- ▶ Prime trailhead for Browns Canyon National Monument without NPS crowding
- ▶ Completely different landscape from Great Sand Dunes — river canyon vs. dune field, same San Luis Valley approach corridor
Planning Notes
Pull-through sites available; paved access off US-285. Very popular summer weekends — reserve 2–3 weeks ahead on Recreation.gov. Afternoon thunderstorms daily July–August. Upstream discharge makes river swimming dangerous in whitewater season; fishing and hiking substitute. Hecla Junction CG (38.760, -106.013) is an equally good alternate 12 mi downstream.
