Highlights

  • White Mountains at 6,500–9,000 ft — the closest high-elevation forest escape from Phoenix and Tucson, and the coolest summer camping in Arizona
  • AZ-260 corridor (Show Low to Springerville) and FR 113 near Greer offer wide paved or graded forest road access suitable for 35-ft trailers
  • Excellent trout fishing on the Black River and Big Lake; elk, black bears, and wild turkeys throughout; dramatically different character from the Sonoran Desert below

Planning Notes

Download Apache-Sitgreaves NF MVUM before departure (available free at fs.usda.gov). Best trailer-friendly corridors: AZ-260 for flat forest meadow sites; FR 113 (Greer area) for riparian sites near the Little Colorado headwaters. Big Lake developed CG (Recreation.gov, $22–24/nt) is the developed fallback with water and vault toilets. Fire restrictions frequently in effect May–June — check AZ fire restriction map. From Austin: ~11 hrs via I-10 W through San Antonio then US-285 NW and I-20 to Odessa is wrong — it's I-10 W to Las Cruces then AZ-70 W through Safford then US-191 N to Springerville, or I-10 W then US-60 W through Globe.
