Highlights

  • 9,100-ft meadow along US-191 (the Coronado Trail) surrounded by spruce-fir forest — the highest and most remote stretch of the Apache-Sitgreaves NF, distinct in character from the Show Low/White Mountains entry
  • US-191 between Clifton and Alpine is a paved national scenic byway — all curves and elevation gain, but fully paved and one of the most beautiful drives in Arizona for a 30-ft trailer
  • Hannagan Meadow Lodge (historic, basic services: fuel, food, small store) 300 ft from the campground — a rare supply point in an otherwise completely isolated stretch

Planning Notes

Hannagan Meadow CG is a small designated campground off US-191 — about 8 sites, first-come. Additional dispersed camping is allowed in the surrounding Clifton Ranger District on legal corridors. US-191 between Clifton and Hannagan is steep and winding — low gears required. The road is fully paved, suitable for 30-ft trailers (allow extra time; 20–25 mph through the curves). From Austin: ~12 hrs via I-10 W then US-70 W through Lordsburg NM and Safford, then US-191 N (Coronado Trail).
